leveling
chapter seven
Locate the benchmarks nearest to the work. If none are available, run a benchmark loop from a known elevation to the jobsite and establish benchmarks around the site.
Step 6
Step 3
Set up a leveling instrument in a location that is as close as possible to being balanced between the benchmarks and the needed footing elevations. When ready, take backsights on two benchmarks to obtain an HI (see earlier discussion).
Step 4
Direct the rod person to the first footing and drive a stake in the ground at the location of the footing, or use an existing stake that marks the location of the footing. The rod person should hold the rod on the ground at the bottom of the stake and the instrument operator will read the foresight.
Step 5
Calculate the ground elevation and com-pare it to the design elevation for the foot-ing. Subtract the two readings and direct the rod person to write a cut on the stake with a crow’s foot so that the excavator knows where to start.
Direct the rod person to other footings in the building. Most likely, the ground elevations will not be the same at each footing location; therefore, an intermediate foresight will be needed to determine the cut at each point.
